I had thought the same thing about the VM, that it should not matter, but it hangs at the pairing step of the HID setup. I was thinking that I did not have access to a machine that could run the VM, but it looks like my wife’s decade old machine running Snow Leopard is a candidate, according to VirtualBox’s webpage. My hope is that someday that WayTools will offer a dongle in their catalog that comes already paired with a TextBlade.

There is complete information on the WayTools Community Wiki page on how to do this option. The scripts have recently took a leap forward in automation and can now be re-ran to re-pair to another TextBlade.

The procedure is to install VirtualBox emulator on a computer download the custom toolbox setup a few things and then basically run the script while the TextBlade is looking for a device to pair with. The setup procedure is not for the faint of heart but has been automated by some good TREGers (not me). This one is larger than the GMYLE and sticks out an inch, but has excellent range. LAIRD Technologies BT820 USB Dongle, Bluetooth, BT800, V4.0, HCI You must first purchase a dongle with the correct chipset and that has 64k of memory. You pair to the dongle and not the computer and thus only pair once but then use it on any computer that supports a USB keyboard. Both of these are better suited for a dedicated dongle that has the bluetooth stack running on the dongle.

(2) The other application relates to using shared computers running Windows 7 that I do not have admin privileges on to install drivers. I got the dedicated dongle for two reasons: (1) the research lab I work in has older equipment with dedicated PCs running XP and these do not have modern Bluetooth hardware nor internet to install drivers.

This one pairs the TextBlade with the dongle and the Bluetooth stack runs on the dongle. I will write up the other dongle tomorrow that is paired in a manner that it looks like a USB keyboard and works with almost any computer without going thru the pairing process. The dongle does not remember the pairing device ID, the Mac does. My language is a bit flawed above, because the TextBlade actually is pairing with the Mac thru the dongle. When I get back and switch to the Mac Jump slot, it will work fine, because the TrackPad is paired with the dongle. The other interesting thing is that if the TrackPad pairs with the dongle and I take my TextBlade on a trip to the local coffee shop to use with my phone. So I am careful about turning off all my bluetooth devices and always powering up the TextBlade first. If I have a TrackPad on when I wake the Mac, the Mac will pair using the older bluetooth hardware and the TextBlade will not work. So here is the catch: If I was to sleep my computer and my TextBlade, when I wake them up, I must make sure the first bluetooth device the Mac sees is the TextBlade. I am not sure how many devices this dongle supports, but it does at least two. You can now turn on other bluetooth devices and pair them thru the dongle. The TextBlade defaults to numbers so you do not have to hold down the space bar to enable the Green Layer. Selecting this device should cause a pairing window to appear on the Mac.The TextBlade should show up in the Devices pane of the Bluetooth Control Panel. You should see what I call landing lights, showing that the dongle is ready to be paired. Select an empty jump slot on the TextBlade, or if you want to reuse another slot make sure this computer, phone or tablet that this was paired has bluetooth disabled.I like to toggle the bluetooth on and then off at this point to make sure the built-in bluetooth is not active. If there are devices connected, turn them off. Make sure no devices are currently paired with your Mac and that bluetooth is on.Here is the pairing instructions, which are also on the Wiki page that should go live when the TextBlade ships. Furthermore, you can not disable bluetooth without inhibiting the dongle at the same time. The Bluetooth Explorer does not see this controller as a separate device so you cannot select it. The first one it finds is the one that it uses leaving the other one unusable. I guess that is why it is called a bluetooth and not a blueteeth device. The current theory for why pairing is at times an issue is that the Mac only supports a single Bluetooth controller. It has some issues with pairing but they can be worked around. So I never forget it and never leave it at home.
